“TO THIS END, THREE PIECES ARE PLACED IN THE LANDSCAPE ACCORDING TO THE TOPOGRAPHY AND THE CONDITION OF SANDWICH BETWEEN THE SKY AND THE SEA THAT THE PLOT HAS: CREMATORIUM, FLOWER STORE AND PAVILION FOR THE MEMORY. IN ADDITION, A NATURAL BURIAL AREA IS SET UP IN A WOODED AREA AT THE FOOT OF THE PLOT.”

Project

In our society, the rites following death and the remembrance of the deceased were in the hands of religion. The abandonment of the practice has led to a crisis about how to deal with the biographical reality of the end of life, through which all human beings hopelessly pass.
The exercise seeks to give a dignified solution to a kind of building perhaps forgotten, or that is not receiving the attention it deserves. Also the context (Igeldo) has been chosen with the intention of removing death from its usual location in a non-place, where it is difficult for the symbolic needs of man to be satisfied. In other words, the crematorium building exists because it matters, we may not necessarily design it for the public, but it must be a stage to match the work represented in it – this requires a high quality cultural product.
To this end, three pieces are placed in the landscape according to the topography and the sandwich condition between the sky and the sea that the plot has: crematorium, flower store and memory pavilion. In addition, a natural burial area is set up in a wooded area at the foot of the plot.
