“TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE REMAINING BUILDABILITY OF THE PLOT, IT WAS DECIDED TO BUILD A 46-ROOM HOTEL WITH CAPACITY FOR 108 PEOPLE, NOT ONLY TO SOLVE A REGIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE DEFICIENCY, BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF THE FABULOUS LOCATION IT REPRESENTS FOR THE EMERGING INDUSTRIAL TOURISM”.

Project

The industrial decline at the end of the century gave rise to a completely degraded urban environment in Sestao: the Txabarri neighborhood. After a late and long process of recovery, the sprouts of a completely socially and urbanistically regenerated neighborhood can already be glimpsed.
However, the historic building of the former Apprentice School of the extinct AHV, like the Cuarto de Socorro and the Alto Horno, remains in a kind of limbo, semi-abandoned.
With the aim of completing the regeneration of the neighborhood with a large tractor project, a Strategic Plan for its recovery has recently been promoted.
On this guideline, we propose the integral rehabilitation of the school building and its surroundings, by means of new itineraries and dynamic uses; residence, municipal dependencies and ‘gaztetxe’.
Taking advantage of the remaining buildability of the plot, we decided to build a 46-room hotel with capacity for 108 people, not only to solve a regional infrastructure deficiency, but also because of the fabulous location it represents for the emerging industrial tourism.
The hotel, entrenched between a hillside, the railroad and the current steelworks, consists of a semi-basement volume and another in the form of a tower over Txabarri Street, as a viewpoint.
An urban elevator acts as a hinge between the two buildings, while a linear park covers the train tracks, which extends to the furnace, and through which the ‘Bidegorri Ezkerraldea’ will run. Likewise, a small square-viewpoint is generated in front of the historic ‘Casa del Arco’.
